How To Obtained International Driving Permit (IDP) For Malaysians

Two weeks ago I decided to apply for International Driving Permit (IDP) for my road trip in August and it was easy peasy lemon squeezy process (hands up for Maria Elena here).
So here is how you can get one for yourself too.

My first International Driving Permit (IDP)!
Originally I didn't plan to get IDP for myself, but after some consideration (budget and transportation wise) pretty much made us said that 'I need to apply for the permit'.

Before I start, let me clarify that this information refers to Malaysia driving licence holders only. If you are in United Kingdom (UK) you may refer to UK driving licence holder requirements for IDP.

5 things you should prepared before applying for the permit.
Before I decided to apply for the permit, I ask around my friends and do a lot of readings (thanks to Azah for answering plenty of my questions 😁  ). Basically, it's a simple process but I'm over reacting to make sure that everything will done in a matter of time.

For this permit, you can apply at:
  • Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) branches
  • JPJ at Urban Transformation Center (UTC
  • Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM).

I went to UTC Sentul on last Sunday (please check their operation hours) and surprisingly it took less than one hour to renew license and applying for the permit, and it was for my mom and myself. The only advice I can give is you just have to make sure to bring all the documents to ease the process.

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO PREPARE BEFORE APPLYING IDP

1. ONE copy of your identity card.
  • Make sure to make a copy of your front and back of your IC (it doesn't matter if it's Black & White OR colour copy).
  • If you applying on behalf of your friend, make sure to bring their original IC too.

2. ONE copy of your license.
  • Your driving license must valid for one year in order to apply for this permit.
  • Make sure to renew it before expired. I renew my license for 5 years, then I made a copy of the license (there are photocopy machine in front of JPJ UTC office).

3. ONE passport size photograph.
  • It doesn't matter if the background are blue or white as long it was a passport size picture.
  • There are plenty of shop that offer this service at UTC Sentul.

4. Fill in Borang Permohonan Lesen Memandu (JPL1).
  • You can either get the form at the branch or just download JPL1 form here.

5. Prepare RM150 for the payment.
  • After finished fill in the form and prepared all documents, submit and pay RM150 to the JPJ staff. This IDP will be valid for ONE YEAR only.

Voila! Now you have your IDP let's make used of it (pstt it's time to travel). For Malay version of this information, I would recommend you to read Kaki Berangan writeup.

    1. Hi Priscilla,

In Malaysia you didn't have to surrender the original license because you will get the international license like on the first picture. At the counter, they already check your license therefore you will keep your original license and get the international license permit.
